Introduction

Dr. Shilpa Gokavi, Consultant in Fetal Medicine and Managing director of Sukruti Fetal Medicine specialised in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MS OBG) at Seth GS Medical College / KEM Hospital Mumbai, one of the most prestigious institutes in the country.

She did her ‘Fellowship in Fetal Medicine’ for 2 years at Bangalore Fetal Medicine Centre under Dr Prathima Radhakrishnan, the first trained Fetal Medicine Specialist in India and then started the very first specialist fetal medicine unit in Hubli. This centre is now established as a specialized referral centre in North Karnataka for Fetal Medicine.

She has also obtained the most sought after certification for first trimester screening and screening for fetal abnormalities from The Fetal Medicine Foundation , United Kingdom.

While training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at KEM Hospital, she developed a keen interest in the unborn baby, having came across tragic incidents of babies being born with mental challenges, structural problems, growth problems, anemia ,genetic problems like Thalassemia , some of which could have been detected and a few dealt with before the baby was born and also prevent the same from happening in the next pregnancy.

While practicising as Consultant Obstetrics and Gynecology for 5 years ,having to deal with pregnant women with problems like high blood pressure leading to fits, premature birth leading to problems in the baby, increased blood sugar in the mother leading to sudden death of the baby in the womb, led her to the quest of finding a ‘better way’ i.e to “prevent” these problems for the mother and her baby or atleast lessen the effect, rather than treat them once they happen. And thats when she embarked onto the field of Fetal Medicine, an advanced specialisation dealing with the health of the baby before he/she is born and that of the mother.

There are a few trained fetal medicine specialists in the country and fewer in the entire region of North Karnataka. Many parents in and around this region have travel to cities like Bangalore or Mumbai to avail this kind of expertise. In order to overcome this limitation and to bring better diagnostic and therapeutic services to this region along with the vision of developing fetal medicine as a prospect of sub-specialty, in future, to the upcoming doctors, she has started Sukruti Fetal Medicine Centre.

Dr Shilpa Gokavi is very passionate about the ‘baby inside your womb’ – her “patient” . She strives to ensure that your baby is in the best of health while in your womb and that you as a couple have a healthy pregnancy throughout !
